How much weight p/w to gain on the beginner template?

Hi Jordan, I am planning on hopefully starting the beginner template in a few weeks (I am still not sure whether I should start it or not because I cannot squat do to a hip injury), and wanted to know how much weight I should gain p/w on the beginner template. I currently weigh 70 kg / 154 lbs @ 13% bf, and at 178 cm / 5’10. I was planning on doing a slow bulk and gain around 15 kg over the next year or two, though i’d like to keep it as a ‘lean bulk’, so I don’t want to gain weight too quickly. I just watched one of the episodes of your podcast with Austin about bulking from about a year ago, and you said that an underweight novice should gain weight quickly on the SSLP. I wanted to know whether it applies also to the beginner template, and how much weight should I gain p/w on it? I also wanted to know how much of a calorie surplus you would recommend in my case?

Hey Josh,

Can you link the video and timestamp where we said that? I don’t think that’s what we said, but if we did I’d certainly like to clarify. We do not recommend rapid weight gain in most cases.

I think the general recommendation I’m comfortable with is ~0.5-2lbs a month weight gain.

The reason I thought this might apply to me is that you said in this video that an individual that is 5’10 @ 150 lbs b/w, which I almost am, may gain around 4-5 lbs p/w on the first few weeks of the NLP, which did actually sound like quite a lot too me.
Anyway, thank you for helping, I’ll try to aim for a 0.5-2 lbs a month weight gain.

Yea, I wouldn’t recommend that rapid of a weight gain for most people. You’ll note the number of caveats associated with the statement, though I still think that I’d like to have that statement back nonetheless. I also don’t think I’d recommend NLP anymore.
