Inguinal hernia 7 months post op

Hi there,

I had an Inguinal Hernia repaired last April, I got back into lifting as soon as it felt comfortable, and as directed by the surgeon, my limits should be guided by pain, and that’s what I followed. My surgeon also said before the operation, he will fix the hernia, but fixing a hernia doesn’t always fix the aches and pains associated with a hernia. I always had very slight ache and pains for months after whenever I was at work or I was lifting, but nothing I felt like I should be concerned with. Eventually the pain stopped (either it stopped or I stopped noticing it because it is only slight aches and pains, I would say 1/10).

When squatting yesterday I felt a tingle on the last couple reps of my last set around the repaired area. Soon after I started feeling the aches associated with my hernia. Now I don’t know whether its because I’m over thinking it or something happened as its the initial tingle to me that was something I never felt before.

I’m just a little worried that I may have opened up the hernia again. I understand a sensible answer would be for me to just get it checked out by a GP. But being from the UK, the NHS is pretty messed up right now and can take a week to be seen. To go private you have to be referred by an NHS GP anyway as far as I’m aware. If that is your advice though I will follow it.

I have done many google searches, searched many forums, but I cant find a solid answer I’m happy with.

My questions are, what would the symptoms of a reoccurrence be? Is it normal to feel aches and pains months after? What could the unusual tingling sensation I felt be?

For your info on questions you might ask

I had open surgery with a mesh repair.
I never had a bulge I could feel or see, my surgeon could just feel it when examining me.

Sorry for the long post. Just thought I would try and cover everything.

Thanks a lot!

With a mesh repair, risk of recurrence is fairly low … but is still possible. We are not surgeons and have not evaluated you, so it’s hard to say here. But with transient tingling in the area, I still think it’s quite unlikely that you’ve had a recurrence. If it persists or worsens, some re-evaluation by a surgeon would likely be in order.
