Issues w/ Binging

Dr. Feigenbaum,

Do you have any recommendations on how to avoid binge eating?

I have recently started to binge late at night, which usually starts with 1 type of dessert after dinner and does not stop until I finish most of the sweets available. These binging incidents happen 1-2 a week. Other than those incidents I am very good at sticking to a regiment eating plan. Current goal is to get waist under 32 inches before starting to slowly gain weight. Background information. Late 20’s male, BW at 175lbs, waist is 32.5 inches, very active lifestyle. Typically I consume ~2200 calories per day that is mostly made up of chicken, rice, and vegetables.

I’d like to stop these from happening because I don’t think this is a desirable relationship to have with food and it also interferes with my goals.

Thanks for your help!

Additionally, some level of discipline is going to be needed here to be able to consume a trigger food without overeating- such as pre-measuring a serving out and sticking to that, perhaps augmented by doing an activity or something afterwards to shift attentional focus. I know, rocket science.

That said, you might need some professional-type guidance here depending on the extent of the issue.

Dr. Feigenbaum,

I understand that proper behavior modification advice is probably outside the realm of a forum post, but I was hoping you could suggest some online resources that I could look into.

Also, in the old post you linked above you said “There are other things to do, but that’s where I’d start as far as self-led interventions.” Could you list those other interventions for someone has already has taken steps 1-3?

That’s not something I’m comfortable doing without establishing a relationship with the individual. I think if this is an issue that is affecting your life, you should see your doctor and ask for a referral to a behavioral therapist and/or registered dietician. We also do this quite frequently in our consultation work, but each approach is individualized. I am also impressed that you’ve been able to change the behaviors listed in less than a week. Major props!

Dr. Feigenbaum,

Thank you for your response and I understand why that would make you uncomfortable. Just to clarify, this is not a huge issue just a recent habit I’d like to take care off as soon as possible so wanted to see if there was something online to read for starting/stopping habits that you would recommend.

If it’s a recent issue, I’d recommend the aforementioned changes be implemented rather than additional reading material
