Just starting the Powerlifting II template and have some questions

Hello there, long time lurker - first time posting!

I started the Powerlifting II template this week and have a few questions that I’ve seen conflicting answers for. I’m looking for guidance so that I might adjust my training appropriately.

Stats:
BW: 229
H: 5’9
1RM Squat: 410
1RM Bench (touch n go): 290
1RM DL (conventional): 455
1RM DL (Sumo): 405 (with a lot left in the tank, just start sumoing recently)
1RM OHP: 175

The questions I have so far are mostly related to the Accessory and Overload lifts.

  1. For Tempo Squats I had a truly hard time even hitting a single set at 135 with the prescribed volume. The musculature in my legs was game but my endurance and breathing couldn’t keep up. Is that kind of normal? I’ll be honest, I overloaded the first set starting at 225 and only hit 8 reps. Next week I was thinking I’d start at 135 and make jumps accordingly (which is what I should have done this week.) Anyway - is that drastic of a drop normal? I’ve been doing HLM with sets 1-3-5 so perhaps it’s just that I need to adjust to the higher volume and the weight will come rapidly after?

  2. Overload lifts in general - are band colors Universally the same across brands? What color should I be using? What’s the correct way to apply these to a monolith and/or regular squat rack with pins? I ended up using the yellow bands today and then came to find out those were only 15lbs of resistance? I’m just wondering if I should be using blue/green to get the correct resistance amount and then adjust the iron weights to meet RPE goals?

Any guidance you can provide on these questions is greatly appreciated!

Kevin,

Thanks for the post!

  1. I think you’ll be up to speed in 2 weeks or so, likely working with low to mid 200’s for reps. Keep working on it!
  2. Unfortunately, I don’t think the band colors are the same across brands. That said, the thin red bands (mini bands) are the same between Elite FTS and Rogue and are the ones I would recommend.

Let us know how it goes!
