Knee Rehab Template: single leg tempo leg press w/tendonitis

Hey Team–I’ve had several knee surgeries: ACL in both knees, meniscus repair in both knees, and most recently meniscus clean up in the left knee 2 years ago.

Anyway–my right knee developed a bit of patellar tendonitis (appears to be..pain below my kneecap when squatting) and went back to the Knee Rebab Template, as it was helpful getting through some pain i still had late last year in my left knee.
This same knee, which i did the tempo 3-0-3 single leg press w/ sets of 15 with like 25 pounds, left leg first, right second…my right leg I could barely do 12 on the last two sets because I was burning in my hip and quad. i could barely walk when i finished i was so worn out. It’s a little different leg press where you lay down and has more of a hip extension, and try to maximize my ROM with a lower setting. It’s really difficult and kept decreasing the weight (the rest of the exercises feel fine and are helpful).
I’m trying to figure out what this means, it’s not aggrivating the pain below my kneecap, it’s just kinda brutal even with very little weight (granted i’m only a few months removed from recent 1RM’s of 355 on LB Squat and 385 on Deadlift…so still had been lifting heavy up until now).

Howdy!

Welcome (or welcome back) to the forum. Wish it were under better circumstances though.

In any case, the decrease in performance in the affected leg is fairly common due a number of reasons, e.g. muscle guarding and any actual force production potential lost due to the injury itself. The latter is typically minor outside of trauma that severely disrupts the anatomy or neuromuscular system, which does not appear to be present here. The other thing that could be contributory is the demands of back-to-back 15-rep sets of 3-0-3 tempo work, one for each leg. The second leg often takes a hit since it’s experienced some loading/created some force from the other leg, and 90s is a long time to do a set, even if it is light. I’d try either putting the R leg first next time, or taking 2-3 min between legs and skipping the between set rest next time to see how that works.
