LDL fiber reduction

Hi, my first post here, I am a regular listener of the youtube videos and podcasts.

I was made aware of Apo (a) and Apo b thanks to your video a couple of years ago. My apo a was normal, my LDL and apo B was slightly high, and I managed to reduce it with by adding fiber to my diet, thanks to reading fiber tips from you. So that has been excellent value addition from your podcasts/forums.

As a background, I am 49, male, Indian descent, VO2 max 44 (as per Garmin and treadmill test with mask). My squats reached 110 kg and Sumo deads 130kg, so not strong by your standards but I do regular workouts. I can run 5k in 24 minutes.

Now – my LDL has come down from 7.5 to 5.8 on the UK scale (above 5 is flagged as high) and apo B from 1.29 to 1.08. No other issues on sugar, blood pressure, TGL, etc.

I think my LDL went up when I started Paleo, because to eliminate carbs I eliminated grains and legumes, and veggies alone were not giving me sufficient fiber. I was always active in exercise, my HDL is at max level, and Triglycerides are low.

I added psyllium husk, barley, oats, bulgur, rye, beans, and chickpeas to my diet (the leafy veggies and one or two fruits a day continued) and my LDL and apo B lowered.

Questions

Now – there seems to be some mild noise about fiber reducing absorption of some nutrients – is there any truth to this – are key nutrients like proteins and vitamins absorbed less, or I need not worry

My HDL keeps going up. 1.6 is considered max, mine is now on 1.7. Never read about dangers of high HDL, but is there any issue here?

Bossdk,

Thanks for the post.

I’m not aware of any harm to higher HDL levels, though my general impression is that HDL is not really something to look at.

Fiber does not increase the risk of nutrient deficiency. I wouldn’t worry about this!

What is the probability that if I try to bulk at 250 extra calories (clean) per day, my LDL will go back up?

Uncertain, as pretty much all weight gain causes fluctuations in lipoprotein levels. After your weight stabilizes, I wouldn’t expect a big difference in your LDL levels one way or another.
