Leg pain when driving

I am in week 4.3 of the Beginners program. I do not think this pain is the result of my training. I went to the foot doc for sensation in my right heel that felt like a twig in my shoe. He diagnosed a heel spur from the plantar tendon pulling away from the heel bone. He gave me some temporary arch supports. I have high arches and he says they tend to fall as we age. A couple of weeks after wearing these I started to develop a pain in my right thigh and outer upper right leg area only when driving. This is the only time it hurts. Any ideas what this could be?

Hey Roamer321 - thanks for the questions. It’s difficult to say what’s going on or how to proceed without a consultation. With that said, I don’t tend to recommend foot orthotics. Is there a game plan from you podiatrist to further address the foot symptoms? Have you considered not using the inserts and see if the symptoms you are having with driving dissipate?

No game plan from Podiatrist other than him prescribing me orthodics for my shoes. He said no bare feet or sandels. I stopped wearing the temporary arch supports{shoe inserts have not come in yet} a couple weeks ago and pain is still present. We are on vacation this week and drove 4 hours. I had to switch off driving with my wife a couple times. We have walking a lot here in Savannah and the back outer part of my leg is sore. It sound like sciatic pain from doctor Google.

I understand. Unlikely I’d agree with the bare feet or sandals recommendation. Ultimately, we need a consult with you to give individual advice. In the meantime, I suggest checking out this article HERE regarding general advice for symptoms and activity. For driving scenarios, my usual recommendation is chunking the activity. Meaning, if you find you can drive 20 minutes with minimal to no symptoms, then that’s your threshold before switching or taking a break.

Thanks, I read the article. My pain mostly happen when walking a lot. Which I do at work and for cardio. So I cannot lower the dose. I think I should be evaluated by a physician. I also have a pain in my back on the left side. What type of doctor do you suggest?

We’d be happy to consult with you remotely if you’d like. If you are interested, please complete our intake paperwork HERE. If remote isn’t a preferred option then I’d find a trusted primary care physician to consult with on these matters and go from there.

I went to the podiatrist today to pick up my shoe Orthotics. He said the pain in my leg is from IT band syndrome. He told me to do some calf stretches to correct it. I don’t think that that’s going to help. What do you think?

Solid probability I’d disagree with that label and recommendations.

PCP sent me to an Orthopedist who sent me to a Chiropractor. Chiro sent me to have x-rays of the spine lumbosacral. Results: Multilevel lumbar spinal spondylosis with disk height loss with endplate osteophyte formation. Multilevel facet arthrosis. Neural foraminal narrowing suspected at L4-L5 and to a lesser degree at L5-S1.

I still have pain in the back of my leg from the top of my glute to my knee and sometimes extending to my ankle only when driving. No lower back pain. Would your Low Back Pain Rehab be helpful for me? I have filled out your Pain Intake form but cannot fit that into the budget at this time.

Potentially. Since you were running the beginner prescription when this all began, then I’m assuming your goals are resistance training (specifically squat, bench press, and deadlift). With this in mind, the LBP template will try and help find a tolerable entry point into activity to build from to get back to those movements. Sounds like you are dealing with radicular symptoms and I don’t usually manage those cases different from an exercise prescription stand point but do monitor neuro symptoms over time as well as set the expectation we may be looking at months vs weeks for recovery.

Chiropractors are the best for any type of back pain such as neck pain, lower back pain, pinched nerves, arthritis, knee pain, sports injury, auto accidents, etc. You should find a trusted skilled and professional chiropractor for the best results.

I am currently being treated by a chiropractor trained in the Gonstead method. I will let you know if it is effective.

I get pain sometimes on the outside of my hip when driving as well. Right on the greater trunchacter. It could be medial glute tendinopathy or bursitis. I have medial glute tendinopathy on my left side too, so I think it might be tendinopathy.
