Long Term Antihistamine Use

Hi,

For probably around 4-5 years now I have been prescribed to take desloratadine tablets to aid in controlling my asthma symptoms. I also have eczema, very irritable/sensitive, dry skin and am prone to some mild allergic reactions (hay fever, dust, foods). I also take montelukast daily.

Recently I stopped taking this medication for a few weeks or so. I’d been pretty busy with my studies and ordering/collecting another prescription had fell to the bottom of a to-do list. I noticed that as soon as I came off this medication, my eczema/allergy symptoms really flared up, more extreme than they were even before medicating. Ironically, my asthma symptoms haven’t been bad at all.

I’m wondering if there are any long term negative effects of daily antihistamine usage? They don’t cause me any noticeable negative side effects other than feeling as if I’ve basically become dependent upon them.

Thanks!

No, I would not be concerned about this.

You have also not become “dependent” on the medicines; you simply have an underlying condition that benefits from treatment.
