Are there any long term side effects of Afrin nasal spray? Searching on the internet shows short time side effects like recongestion but I don’t know if there are any other serious health consequences. I have been using them every day for several years and find it difficult to fall asleep without using using it. I have tried several times to quit my “addiction” but always develop headaches and have trouble falling asleep after not using it for 2 days.
Yes, chronic use can result in rebound congestion and vasodilation, leading to a condition known as rhinitis medicamentosa. There may be some effects on blood pressure as well.
I would be more inclined to try alternative treatments for nasal congestion (presumed allergic) rather than consistent use of vasoconstrictors.
Thanks Austin. I have tried saline spray, breathe right strips, steam inhalers, using nasal spray in one nostril only, and nothing works. I end up with headaches and lack of sleep and end up relapsing after 2-3 days. I feel like if I stick with it for a week the discomfort will reduce over time and I might be able to quit. But I will have to do this during a vacation when my sleep schedule isn’t important. The reason why I asked about serious health consequences is that if there isn’t any long term risk, I might not have to fight this battle.
I would recommend discussing this with a physician. Intranasal corticosteroids (which it does not sound like you have used) may be a superior (and safer) option to use, depending on the suspected cause.
