Hello and thank you for any help/advice you give in advance.
I’ve had chronic pain both knees since my mid to early 20s. I blame a lot of this on myself because I’ve become obese over the past two decades. I’m now in my early 40s and working very hard to make positive changes in my lifestyle. I’m losing weight at a steady pace and I recently finished the SS Novice LP. However, I’m starting to get a little frustrated with my knee pain and I’m not quite sure where to start to find relief.
I do a good job dealing with the pain most of the time but I get frustrated when, after squatting and deadlifting, my knees swell and become stiff. Sometimes the pain keeps me up at night and walking becomes a challenge. There are times when the pain becomes almost unbearable and I find it hard to stand for extended periods. I don’t want to stop training because I enjoy it for the most part. However, I’m often tempted to not train because I know it will only aggravate my knees again.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on what I can do moving forward to find some relief.
Hey @buckeyeguy - first off, great job on making positive health changes in your life.
Regarding knee symptoms and training - I’d recommend getting a consult with us so we can help guide this path: Contact Us | Barbell Medicine
Often load and fatigue management can help with the symptoms you are describing. We typically recommend using subjective markers such as Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and session RPE to help guide the path - rather than chasing any particular numbers. With that said, there is likely a lot of information to cover to get you on the right track and a conversation would be easier.
