Losing weight and gaining muscle

Hey Doc, I felt a need to ask your opinion about this.

I know it’s a topic that has been talked about a lot but I recently watched Brad Schoenfeld say studies show that you can lose fat and gain muscle even if you are not untrained or overweight. Also I remember that Eric Helms said that you can be anabolic and catabolic subsequently throughout the day. So there is a possibility to burn fat and and build muscle at the end.

I believe you said something like you cannot lose weight and gain muscle or you cannot be in both states (anabolic and catabolic) which contradicts what these guys say. Anyway I was just wondering If I am missing something here.

Much appreciated. Thanks

I have never said you can’t be anabolic and catabolic at the same time, as these processes are always occurring 24/7. That said, I do not think most folks who are trained, but are not very good responders to training will gain significant amounts of muscle mass while losing significant amounts of body fat over time.

This doesn’t mean you need to be bulking or cutting aggressively all the time, but there’s nothing new here either.
