Lowering the bar in the Classic Press

Hi BBM crew.

I was just wondering how would you lower the bar to the upper chest (the eccentric portion) in the Classic Press. Do you initiate the layback at the same time you start lowering the bar? Or do you lower the bar to your upper chest, THEN start the layback? Or is it something else?

I noticed that where the bar ends up on my upper chest is inconsistent (sometimes too high, sometimes too low), which affects my bar path.

Thank you!

Hi Abel,

First have you seen this? It might help you a bit in your press work-Press Like A Pro: The Classic Press | Barbell Medicine
You will lower the bar with a slight lean back, head out of the way, to your chest, but this style does have a reset as needed at the chest. It’s not a touch and go style, necessarily, so you can reset your elbows, get tight, breath, and then lean and press again. Hope this helps!
