With the rising cost of food at the minute, specifically chicken in the UK, would there be any downsides to obtaining the lion’s share of my protein intake from whey?
I currently have a shake with breakfast and c.300g of chicken a day. I’d look to swap this to two double scoop shakes a day and roughly 100g of chicken a day, with the remaining protein coming from other sources like veggies etc.
Is whey really less expensive than chicken, fish, eggs, and/or beef? I find that hard to believe given the whey prices we’re being quoted for production, but I suppose anything is possible.
It’s not less expensive but I find it lasts longer and has a higher protein content per serving. For example, the whey I use has c.900g of protein per kg, whereas chicken has c.280g, at least according to myfitnesspal. I’m also able to buy my whey in bulk and pay over installments which lessens the pain.
Either way, I assume whey is suitable as a main protein source?
Here in Germany whey is about 20-25€ /kg, chicken goes for around 8€ /kg.
So whey technically would be cheaper. We have something called “Magerquark” which is a lowfat quark / yoghurt, its pretty much unbeatable for 1€ / kg for 60g of proteins
I wouldn’t advise that over long periods of time, but if you wanted to do it in a pinch…realizing it’s not a sustainable dietary pattern and eschews some benefits of eating other sources of protein… that’s fine.
