Hi- I’ve been prescribed metoprolol twice a day. Would the timing of my dose have any effect on my training?
Potentially, yes, as it primarily blunts the heart rate response to exercise (as well as a few other effects).
What was this prescribed for?
Atrial Fibrillation.
Ah, in this case you don’t really have much of a choice, as 1) all rate-control agents for atrial fibrillation will also blunt the heart rate response to exercise, and 2) you actually want the 24-hour coverage with the drug in order to ensure that you don’t go into rapid atrial fibrillation.
Thanks, Dr. I have my follow-up to my ER visit / hospital stay next week with an electro physiologist. Any training related questions I should be thinking about?
Nope, I don’t think so.
Without more demographic information and history about you here it’s difficult to advise on the atrial fibrillation too, but presuming that this was a new diagnosis, the things I’d be looking at are your weight/waist circumference, consider testing for sleep apnea, and other risk factors for heart disease.
