Have there been any studies on resistance training with Atrial fibrillation? I just got back from the hospital and I was diagnosed with Atrial fibrillation there. I know at my age there’s not a lot to worry about, the doctor also had no problems with me continuing training. I’m just wondering if there’s anything to suggest that the training will help out with the condition or am I just gonna have to expect the odd dizzy spell and weakness?
Nothing specific to RT that I’m aware of.

Thanks Austin, I’ll give that a read.
If i may, I have an aside question I’m not sure you’ll be able to answer, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
I blacked out and went into the emerg. I had a normal blood pressure but my heart rate while sitting around was 170. They put me on an EKG and that’s when they nabbed the AFib. All blood work came back ok so they released me with a referral for a cardiologist and a script for metoprolol to take if I get another sustained period of a high heart rate. My question is that the emerg doc wasn’t sure about taking metoprolol before the gym and I just wanted you opinion on it. I’m finding my heart really gets going during the leg press and heavy bench and it seems to effect my inter set recovery some days.
Any thoughts?
There’s quite a bit more detail that would be needed here, unfortunately.
Based on the information you provided it sounds like you have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (based on the history and their treatment plan), but it’s not 100% clear. It’s also hard to know what’s going on with your heart rate / rhythm during training without some sort of monitoring (i.e., whether it’s sinus tachycardia or atrial fibrillation), so I can’t make confident recommendations on the metoprolol there. Sinus tachycardia would be an appropriate response to hard training and would not require treatment, whereas rapid Afib would.
Finally, make sure you’ve had / are undergoing a sleep study to evaluate for sleep apnea, as this can be a driver of AF.
Sleep study…Check! Thanks so Doc!
kinda thought there’d be a huge list of back info you’d need. Had my figures crossed the med question would be less involved but I should have know better
cheers!
I’ve been on metroprolol, 100mg for several years, and training seriously for the past year or so. I’d be happy to help or answer any questions from my experience with it.
