Muscle spasms / twitching, insomnia

Been getting persistent muscle spasms / twitching over the past few weeks. Seems to coincide with insomnia (specifically, not being able to fall asleep).

All started a few months ago when did “extreme fasting”, like one meal a day at night, for a cut. Went away for a while when I started eating breakfast, as I linked it to the fasting. While it mostly went away during this period, it’d come back on days w/ lots of physical activity (i.e. lifting and conditioning, for example). Now simply eating when hungry, which is usually brunch / lunch, dinner, and dessert, skipping breakfast.

Am moderately caffeinated (~24oz coffee / day, 2 mugs in the morning).

Had magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium blood-tested, all “within normal range”, though the test for magnesium was done one day after I’d started supplementing it via Trace Minerals, so not sure if the test was influenced.

Would prefer to eat “naturally”, when hungry, as opposed to “forcing” breakfast and avoiding high levels of physical activity.

My thinking is that fasting / physical activity deplete minerals and electrolytes, and that supplementation may be useful. Though everything was within normal range, not indicating depletion.

Any advice?

While technically possible, it’s unlikely that you’ve suddenly developed some sort of significant electrolyte disorder (especially since your labs were normal). Our kidneys do a remarkably good job of taking care of these concentrations for us.

Got it.

The article, summarized: Nothing is known, and no treatments can be recommended.

That being said, he seems to point to the brain / CNS as the culprit, and sedatives as the “only true muscle relaxants”.

The former point jives with my experience.
