Muscle strain upper trap area

Hi BBM Team,

Sometimes when I BB OHP all of a sudden I’ll strain some muscle and feel some pain around the upper trap area. It feels uncomfortable afterward when I turn my neck to look to the side and especially when I chin-tuck. This has happened a few times before. I’m pretty meticulous about my form, and I warmup starting with bar and progressing in weight and sometimes doing band exercises like pull-aparts and dislocations. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?

Unfortunately not.

Managing your training loads appropriately & recovering well are the main factors we can control here. Outside of that, sometimes things just happen – I’m dealing with the same sort of neck tweak for no apparent reason this past week, that didn’t even develop in the context of training. Gradually improves on its own with time and continued activity.
