My breakfast protein shake

I am trying to gain weight so I’m eating a high amount of calories daily and every morning for breakfast I make myself a protein shake consisting of the following ingredients:

  • 400ml Whole Milk
  • 70g Impact Whey Protein (MyProtein brand)
  • 70 Instant Oats (MyProtein brand)
  • 15 - 20g of Clear Honey
  • One tablespoon of Whey Protein Peanut Butter (MyProtein brand)

I also add 5g of Creatine Monohydrate

All in all it works out at 926 calories, 87.4g of carbs, 29.9g of fat and 81.5g of protein.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions or thoughts on if/how good it currently is or anything I can amend to improve on it would be much appreciated.

I think if it has the calorie amount you prefer, it fits into your macros/meal times/frequency and you like to drink it, I think it’s great.

Hey Dave,

I think to answer your question we’d have to look at your diet as a whole.

How many calories per day are you aiming for? What are your target macros? How many times per day do you eat? How much fibre are you consuming?

I think in general 81g of (mostly animal) protein in a single meal is unnecessary. You only need about 30-35g of animal protein per meal to trigger muscle protein synthesis, and the rest can come from other sources. You could probably remove a lot of the whey - but I don’t know what the rest of your daily protein intake looks like, so I don’t know.

As for the actual ingredients, they look fine (and delicious), and shakes are for sure a pretty good way to get more calories in your diet.

Hey Dave,

What do I think of it? I’d ask, does it help you reach your daily calorie and macro goals such that you gain weight consistently over time? If so, cool. Carry on.

I always add a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter to my smoothies. Lots of calories, and peanut butter is goddamn delicious. It’s an easy way to add hundreds of barely-noticeable calories to your day

Really, all you need to know.

Makes me wish I was trying to gain instead of lose. Sounds delicious.

That’s more whey than you really need. You would be fine with half that much. But carry on if it’s moving you in the direction you’re trying to go.

This is the first time I’ve seen a person on weight gain not just eat everything, but choose foods and make sure their diet is balanced. Now I am on a calorie deficit, I also make this smoothie in the morning, it helps me to wake up and not eat more calories.

Your breakfast shake sounds delicious! I’m actually lactose intolerant, so I can’t have whole milk, but I’ve found that using coconut milk powder instead works great as a substitution. It’s a great source of healthy fats and adds a nice flavor. So, you can also try using coconut milk powder in your shake. It could be a great alternative to whole milk. Besides, you can add more of it to increase the calorie intake if needed. Have you tried it yet? Let me know how it goes and if you have any other questions about using coconut milk powder.
