Hi Drs,
My wife and I recently listened to the recent 2019 Chicago Q/A podcast that dropped this past Monday where a seminar participant asked a question on whether you guys had any special diet or training recommendations for menopausal women. If I understood the context correctly, much of discussion touched on concerns that menopausal women have that they possess “special difficulties” with regard to increased fat mass and decreased lean mass, and that fat loss (and lean gain) is particularly difficult for that population when compared to younger women not close to menopause. We took away from the ensuing discussion that neither of you felt there was any special cause for concern in the menopausal population and that diet and training recommendations would effectively be the same for them as for anyone else.
My wife is one of those women who has such concerns, and who feels frustrated by real and perceived lack of progress in her past attempts to lose weight. She feels her particular challenges could be related to hormone (estrogen) patches she has prescribed to her by her OB/GYN (to control hot flash symptoms) creating possible bloat and water retention issues that can mask weight loss measurement or otherwise interfere with progress. She also suffers from significant migraines that adversely affect her ability to stay as consistent as she would like with diet and exercise. While she and I both agreed that the Q/A discussion on menopause was valuable, she feels that she her particular concerns were not adequately addressed.
I am writing to ask if you think she would benefit from a personal consultation with a BBM professional that can dive into her concerns in more detail. She said she would most prefer any possible consultation be with an female doctor or trainer to whom she can better relate, but who can also provide very informed opinions with regard to her concerns. Would you have anyone in mind, and if so, could we set something up?
I have consulted and trained with BBM, specifically with Dr Michael Ray, to address shoulder pain and rotator cuff tendinopathy. My experience was very positive and I am hoping Lynda will have a similar experience.
Best regards,
-Jeff
