Need to replace a couple lifts to work around hernia

I’m in week 8 of the knee template with leg press, DL and single leg extensions combined with the Bridge 1.0 for upper body and GPP.

I just got diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. The doctor has said I could keep training but gave me red flag symptoms to keep an eye out for.

Right now DL and other variants make me nervous so I think I’ll drop those from my program till I get this thing fixed. The OHP is another movement that causes discomfort. For this I was thinking of subbing in either seated press or inclined bench and just using the Bridges press rep/set RX.

This is sound good or am I missing something? Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear about the hernia! Fortunately, after the repair and recovery you should be good to go. During the interim, your subs for the press would be fine and I’d try single leg dumbbell RDL’s or good mornings to see if you can tolerate them.

Thanks Jordan!

i was able to do RDLs yesterday though the weight wasn’t very much. I got to 145lbs for 15@6, but when I added 10lbs the hernia acted up.

My concern was that if I’m unable to do a weight that challenging enough, is it even worth doing. In situations like hernias is it a matter of “anything is better than nothing”?

Sorry…unable to edit my post.

By “challenging enough” I mean if the weight I can do isn’t a large enough dose to accomplish anything is it even worth doing. Or is it just a matter of doing anything because something is better than nothing.

I think all exercise is “worth doing” from a health perspective. Might not be getting maximal adaptations for strength or hypertrophy, but it’s better than not training.

ill keep on with the regular RDLs then and just work up to tolerance

thanks again for your time Doc

Update: I had my hernia repair today and things went great. There is very little discomforts even when up and moving around. My surgeon said I can return to lifting after 6 weeks but I need to start slow. I was planning on starting with the Beginners Template and was wondering, would doing the template as is be a good idea or should I modify the RPE for the first few weeks? Maybe cap it at 7 or something like that?

Cheers!
