New to lifting mobility issues

Hello! I am fairly new to barbell training and I have some issues. I’m 6ft 4 330lbs with a very long torso for my height. My main goal is to lose body fat but I would still like to resistance train as I continue to lose weight. I find it very hard to get into the proper positions to do any barbell lift other than bench press. My heels start to rise after coming down a quarter of the way in the squat even in squat shoes. Getting into the proper position for the deadlift and maintaining a neutral spine feels impossible as well. What’s the best way to address this? I’ve heard conflicting things on the best ways to improve mobility.

Andrew,

Welcome to the forum. Good to have you here!

The barbell lifts can certainly be challenging to learn, though this varies amongst individuals (like nearly everything else).

I do not think your mobility is likely to be a significant problem here. Rather, it is more likely that your exercise technique needs to be adjusted. It would be helpful to see your squat in order to give you some tips for starting. I’d hazard a guess that you’re trying to stay too upright with your torso, but would want to take a look at it first before offering more advice.
