Nosebleeds

Hey everyone. I was sick last week with a head cold and pretty bad dry nose. For the very first time in my life I got a nosebleed. I trained Saturday no problem. Last night I was doing some deadlifts and my nose started to bleed again.
Both times I was able to stop the bleeding within a few minutes and am assuming the correlation with the nosebleeds is from the dry nose I had from being sick. Just wanted to know if there were any recommended protocols/work around so I don’t have to modify training too much. I was only in the mid 300’s on the deadlift but maybe it was the bent over position that helped trigger the bleed?

All insight is appreciated, thank you!

I’d just use some saline nasal spray to keep things from getting dry. Pretty common in the wintertime.

I tend to use saline nasal rinse and a humidifier when sleeping during winter months to help this issue.

Hey Austin,

I emailed in a similar question to BBM a while ago. When I was about 9 weeks into my novice LP/program, I would get nosebleeds on my working sets. Is this common? I’ve since moved on to an intermediate template doing a comp squat, 1@8, -20% X 5reps X 6 sets and have not had any nosebleed issues. Should I be concerned if the nosebleeds come back? Thanks.

I would not say nosebleeds are common from training. If they are concerning to you, an in person evaluation may be helpful.

Thanks Austin. I feel like most Doctors would just tell me not to squat, especially not to squat “heavy”. Is there some type of consultation I could get from BBM to get more information and feedback? if so, do I just send an email directly from this link?

Since we cannot look inside your nose, I don’t think we have much to offer from a remote consultation standpoint, unfortunately.

More importantly, remember that when you go to see a doctor, you are “hiring” them as a consultant to provide you with advice, and you are free to do with this advice what you wish. Your question to them is not whether you can/should squat, but rather whether there is a treatable cause of these nosebleeds that can be identified.

Thanks for the tip Austin. If this happens again, I will do just that.

This is a paradigm I, an average Joe Blow, wouldn’t consider without it being pointed out to me.
