Nutrition for Type 1 diabetics

Hello Austin and Jordan.

My girlfriend is a type 1 diabetic (no insulin pump) I’m trying to help her in the continuous uphill battle of maintaining her blood sugar level. I am curious if either of you can point me to some nutritional resources in an attempt to help her with this daily struggle.

I’ve heard that ketongenic dieting can aid in maintaing blood sugar, same with intermittent fasting. However, some resources have a hint of snake oil attached to it.

There is a ton of information out there, hoping you can point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

Hey Greg,

Thanks for the question and I hope you’re well.

That said, it is not appropriate for you (or I) to help your GF nutritionally. She needs to be seen by her endocrinologist and their nutritionist(s). I’d also wonder why she does not have an insulin pump if she does have poorly controlled blood sugar. If her blood sugars are well controlled however, perhaps this is a reason she does not have a pump. Either way, that’s not for us to discuss here because I am not her physician and she needs to be managed under the watchful eye of a clinician.

As far as a ketogenic diet, no- it does not maintain blood sugar better than a calorie matched “normal” diet.
