On sumo accessories

BBM,

I’m on the older hypertrophy template, 3 weeks in, but problems and pain with my low back have made conventional belted deadlifts very painful and some days not doable, so I’ve switched to sumo for the belted deadlifts. My question is, if the conventional accessories are something I find untenable while rehabing/dealing with my lbp, what sumo accessories or other accessories would you recommend I sub in for those movements? I mean, what am I supposed to do, not train?

Thank you!

JTL,

Thanks for this and hope your back is doing better.

I think in this case I’d recommend either doing the additional pulls sumo (e.g. swapping in sumo paused deadlifts for paused deadlifts) or doing a much lighter pull variation to help control fatigue and build up some work capacity as you continue to improve with respect to your back pain (e.g. tempo RDL’s, seated row, lat pull downs, etc.).

Dr. Feigenbaum,

So far my lbp has been in…remission? it has been getting much better, and I’ve been able to work up to decent weights for conventional accessories. I have been using the conventional deficits as prescribed, working up slowly and feeling it out as I go, and have been focusing mostly on being smooth off the floor while using lower weights, as I’ve noticed any form of jerking the bar aggravates my lbp instantly. this is the first time I’ve ever pulled sumo as well, so I have been mixing in paused sumo lifts to focus on form off the floor, and have been enjoying myself in spite of the lbp. The pedlay rows are usually uncomfortable, so I use chest supported rows for myoreps. For the back GPP, I’ve been thinking of using low load movements that go through the range of motions that are associated with discomfort to desensitize and increase work capacity and confidence, like the tempo RDL’s you mentioned.

Thank you for the help with addressing this issue through training, which luckily happened now in off season when I can be patient with it and not worry about max performance. Hope it continues getting better with what I’m doing about it now, but if not it’s great having these forums here for troubleshooting my training so I can effectively continue.
