Poverty deadlift tips for short kings

Hi BBM,

I ran the Original Strength III template and hit a 280kg squat, a 205kg bench, and narrowly missed a 300kg deadlift at 92kg bodyweight at 5’7. After that, I cut down to 83kg and ran the low fatigue template. I’m now sitting at 85kg on the Strength III Gen 2 template, but my sumo deadlift is still lagging behind the other lifts.
I’m not planning to compete anytime soon, but it’s definitely hurting my total, and let’s be honest, a 317.5kg deadlift would look pretty sweet on Instagram. Is there anything I can do to bring it up? Or do I just have to accept that, with short arms, my pull will always hurt my total?

Cheers guys, love your work.

While I think that most people will have a lift or two they excel at comparatively, I don’t think there’s one weird trick that’s holding back your deadlift per se’. What I mean by that is, if you’ve been training your DL on the programs you listed here, I would expect that it’s improved provided the work has been done. If this is not the case, an assessment of programming variables and technique are probably worthwhile. Some of our troubleshooting approach is described in the Low Fatigue eBook.

I don’t have enough information here to really recommend a direction, but I do start to wonder about overshooting the DL training and reduced volume compared to what’s recommended.
