I was taking peri-rx for awhile, the caffeine free version, and it’s been out of stock for awhile. Since then I’ve just been taking creatine monohydrate. I’ve looked at alternative pre-workouts, until peri-rx becomes available again, but most of them have a bunch of additional ingredients. I found one that has pretty similar ingredients to peri-rx, but also has alpha-gpc in it. What are your thoughts on that? Or I’ve thought about just getting a beta-alanine and citrulline malate (or l-citrulline?) individual supplement so I’m not getting extra stuff. The beet root supplement sounds difficult because most don’t advertise their nitrate content. Thoughts to get through until peri-rx becomes available?
I don’t really have a go-to pre workout supplement that I would recommend in your situation, mainly because you’re not using caffeine, which is the most beneficial ingredient in a pre-workout. Almost everything else, save for the nitrate supplement, doesn’t really have a clock on it as far as helping performance and/or ROI from the workout itself.
I think it’s reasonable to take creatine monohydrate, beta alanine, and betaine anhydrous daily. I don’t think you need to take these immediately before or after a workout to get the most out of them, though they are often consumed at those time points due to convenience.
Is there a benefit to supplementing citrulline malate or l-citrulline? Would there be value in timing this, as a preworkout?
There can be a modest benefit, but I don’t think it needs to be taken pre-workout per se either. Caffeine is really the only time sensitive one.
It’s pretty convenient for my current schedule to take “pre-workout” in the evening, several hours after I’ve actually worked out. However I thought that most of these ingredients, minus creatine and beta alanine, had been studied as pre-workout, at least that’s what Examine.com seems to suggest.
Yep, many have been primarily studied in the pre or peri workout time period, though that doesn’t mean they need to be taken at that time. Creatine was primarily studied like this, but has shifted and revealed the time of dosing is not terribly important. I think that’s also true for some of the other agents discussed above.
Are there any, besides caffeine, that you’d recommend as pre-workout over the others?
I realize this is total nitpicking, but my curious mind would like to know.
Outside of adherence reasons, I think the best case could be made for a nitrate, and for those who prefer a little more “calm” energy, a small bit of L-theanine to balance out the caffeine.
Will there be a caffeine-free version of the forthcoming Peri-Rx? Or is everything except caffeine going to be in the post version since it’s not as important to take pre-workout?
I do use caffeine before a workout, but in the form of coffee/energy drink which I enjoy. I try to stay <=200mg per day, so the 300mg would be too much for me even if the pre was my only source of caffeine.
By the whey (ha), BBM chocolate whey is hands-down THE best tasting chocolate whey I’ve had, and I’ve had a lot of them. It also makes a great “mocha” with some decaf cold brew.
