In the novice plug in for bench and press and also in the bridge, presses are described as being from a “dead stop” and not “touch and go.” Does this mean it must be a strict press, or is a dynamic start (a la press 2.0) allowable as long as the bar comes to a dead stop between each rep? What is the ultimate goal of doing it this way?
You can do a dynamic start as long as it comes to a dead stop first. The idea is to remove any extra momentum for a greater training effect. Similiar to how touch and go deadlifts allow you to do “less work” by taking advantage of a bounce off the floor
In terms of general strength, the ultimate goal is to make each rep exactly equal to the next. A dead stop at the shoulders is also equivalent to what would be performed at a competition.
