Prolonged Right Knee Pain

Hello Barbell Medicine Crew!

Over the past 7 months, I have been having issues with my right knee when squatting.

It hurts sometimes when training, but also on non-training days as well. Seems to be hit or miss. Though it hurts, I have been able to train with normal intensities and volume. (70-92% intensities with average volume being 50-70 working reps a week). My squat frequency is 2x per week. Heavy squatting seem to exacerbate the problem.

From what I have read, it sounds like it could be patellofemoral syndrome. Or maybe training fatigue? Not sure…

The current advice I have gathered from listening to the crew’s IG lives and podcasts is that:

  1. Its unlikely a form issue. NOTE: I do have a slight shift in my squat to the right side
  2. Try reducing squats to once per week until symptoms improve. NOTE: I am assuming this implies a reduction in volume

I am coming off a competition/peak and starting a restoration/washout block, performing 4x10 (1 @6, 1 @7, 2 @8) of a squat variation (beltless highbar) once per week until my symptoms improve. Is this a good idea and should I potentially go see a medical professional? I can provide more information if needed as things seem to be quite ‘nuanced’

I would like to thank anyone who responds in advance for their expertise and time. Excited to be a part of the community!

You didn’t really describe what you’re feeling, when / where you feel it, etc. which makes it difficult to comment here.

Happy to hear you’ve gotten benefit from our material.

And if that training protocol is working for you and your knee feels good, carry on! I don’t see anything inherently dangerous/crazy about it.
