Hi guys, I turned 60 this year. Still going strong with SBD. A while back, maybe 2 years ago, I heard you guys in a podcast say that older men should eat twice the amount of protein to get similar result as if you were younger.
Before I even attempt that, I’d like to know if you still advocate that. I’m healthy otherwise.
I weigh about 195 lbs.
Thank you

I believe the soundbyte would’ve went something like “older men should probably get twice the RDA for protein” and/or “there’s some research showing that older individuals need double the amount of protein as a younger person to get the same muscle protein synthesis response”. The second soundbyte is less pointed
A few things are at play here. First, young or old, man or woman, trained or not, I think most people should be eating double the RDA for protein (which 0.8g/kg/d) to get the most out of their training. Some people will need a little more than this, whereas others may choose to have more based on their personal preferences.
Older individuals tend to benefit the most from more protein when they’re relatively inactive and/or have chronic medical conditions. Both of these things are relatively common, but may not necessarily apply to you.
For a 60-year old who is otherwise healthy, well-trained, and so on, I’d be targeting 1.6 g of protein per kilo bodyweight per day.
