protein intake as i age

I have always been of the mentality that gaining weight is good, being big is better, and in order to be strong, you need to be eating a ton and ingesting tons of protein. As i have absorbed more of your guys content, i have realized this mentality is not the best. I see lots of strong people (yourselves included) that are a normal weight and if anything even lean.

im 36, 5’10 215 waist 34-36 (pant size) but i feel as i am getting older, im storing more of my calorie intake as fat instead of metabolizing it better like when i was young. My goals now are :

1- to be healthy
2 - to be strong
3- to enjoy it

so my question is should i keep taking protein powders ( i take 1 scoop with milk in the morning and 1 in the evening)?? or should i just eat 3 healthy meals w/out the added calorie/fat from protein powder?

thanks you guys are awesome!

Hey Cole,

Thanks for the message. What’s your waist circumference? https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog…ist-correctly/

For protein, it doesn’t matter really where you get it from, provided you’re hitting 1.6-3.1g/kg bodyweight per day and less than 10% of your daily calories from saturated fat.

i dont know about the accuracy of my measurement bc i dont have a cloth tape, so i used a cable, then measured the cable with a regular tape measure, but i got 38 in.

your article says 40 is the cutoff, but im sure i could stand to lose a few. should i cut out the protein powder, or maybe mix with water instead of milk (ughh) or should i cut back on the food calories? i need to keep in mind i want good health but i also want my SBD numbers lol

thanks so much doc

I think anything over 37" increases the risk of adiposity-related chronic disease, thus I would recommend a calorie deficit in this situation
