Quad Rupture

So I had my first powerlifting meet in November and it went great, however a month later i ended rupturing/tearing my right quad tendon and needed surgery to repair it. One of the nurses at the ER said that I’ll never be able to squat heavy again and that I’ll never be able to compete again. Is this True?? If not, how long should I give powerlifting a break after surgery before I can start training heavy again?

Do yourself a favor;

Don’t listen to those saying you can’t, you won’t, etc. The moment you start saying “I can’t” you’re right.

Be positive (okay to let in the negative sometimes too :slight_smile:
Be patient; this will take time. Don’t try to get better faster. Embrace the process
Be persistent
Work with your surgeon and rehab professional. It’ll be a team approach.

I’ve seen plenty of folks return to their valued activities after this procedure.

All the best!

Sorry to hear about this. I second what @Matthew_Rupiper_PT said above. You can certainly train again in the future. This will be a process and if you need help with it let us know. We’d be happy to consult on the case: Contact Us | Barbell Medicine.

Matt is spot on with this. You are going to have a long road to full recovery, but by no means will you not be able to come back from it. That part is predicated upon a good plan, patience, and a supportive group of individuals to back you up. Luckily you’re a part of BBM and we’re good at all three.
