Question on pant size and waist fluctuation

Hi, in the interest of being succinct:

  1. Guy in his late 20s, 5’ 10”, 178 lb, hold my fat in my torso so estimated 17-20% body fat
  2. Have been following your programming and have been dieting successfully
  3. Immediate goal is to get a 6 pack or at least a muscular/relatively flat midsection. Right now I’ve gone from a 37 inch waist down to 33 inches, hoping to stop at 31 or 32.

Question: in your experience with clients, once they hit a target body comp, does waist size go back up significantly as they begin to add muscle while attempting to maintain roughly the same body fat percentage? I ask because all my pants are too large and I want to buy new ones but am curious whether I’ll outgrow them again after finishing my cut and beginning to bulk.

Over the course of the next 2 decades I’d be happy sticking around 15% body fat.

Yes, usually the waist circumference will go up as people gain weight, albeit relatively slowly. I don’t think any of your pants from right now are going to be useful in the future.

Thank you! I’ll hold off on expensive pants for the short term.

Out of curiosity, what’s your waist circumference been over the past decade as you gained muscle?

I don’t have all the details, but I was 28" in 2012 as a 181 and now sit around 31" or so.
