Question on what Jordan said about protein absorption in video with Rippetoe

I may be wrong to speak up here, but after reading your post i feel like your trying to find a reason for your difficulty gaining weight in a digestion or otherwise nutrition based health issue. I think there a few misconceptions hurting the main understanding.

1.over eating/feeling stuffed even frequently may not equal being in a carlorie surplus over a long enough time to cause a steady weight gain. Some people just feel full early on when eating and need to eat smaller more frequent meals to maintain a calorie surplus over the long term ( weeks) .
For personal note it took me months when i was younger to get used to eating enough food to gain weight even .5lb every week , now that i have been eating more food regularly (years) i can easily hit my needed calories in 4 “normal to me” sized meals.

  1. i don’t think that indigestion or other digested related symptom have directly relation to how much food we are actually absorbing. Kinda like how making yourself sore in the gym every day doesn’t mean your going to increase your muscle mass.

Not so much any more.

Jordan’s original statement conflicted with conclusions I had drawn from my personal experience from when I was much younger and prone to extremes of eating behavior.

It wasn’t until his last post that I felt there was sufficient information to see that those conclusions were incorrect.

In later years I have been able to gain weight, at least some fat around my belly.

I started easing into a strength training program using the basic barbell lifts a couple of months ago, and my body fat has gone down a % or so at the same weight, and am getting stronger (hard to say exactly because I started far from my limits), so I’m cautiously optimistic and will add some more calories.

Can you post an example of what you were eating on a typical day last time you tried to gain weight? Have you counted calories/macros?

you’re nocebo’ing yourself.

Out of curiosity, does celiac disease affect the amount of endogenous proteins the bowel makes and/or the ability to gain weight? I remember the West Virginia QB Clint Trickett supposedly couldn’t gain weight (6’2", 155lbs) until he was diagnosed with celiac disease and then made it up to 180 lbs when it was addressed.

Celiac influences nearly all tissues especially the gut, but once treated people tend to get better.

dunno what that means

ah, maybe nocebo vs. placebo
