Protein Absorption and Fart

Hi Jordan,

I’m 46yo, Asian male. High protein diet makes me fart a lot. (Some of them could embarrassingly last for seconds.) Initially I thought it was the lactose in the milk and WPC. But even if I switched to lactose-free milk and WPI, it hasn’t improved. For example, if I eat a big piece of chicken breast at lunch, I’ll fart like hell later in the day.

Apart from the embarrassment, I’m worried about my protein absorption. As I understand it, farts happen because non-fully digested/absorbed protein enters the large intestine and is fermented by bacteria to produce the unpleasant gases. If so, (1) What contributes to my poor protein absorption? Age? Eating too much? (2) What do I do? Eat even more to compensate for it?

Thanks

John

It’s unlikely that protein absorption is the problem unless you have a bunch of diarrhea after protein containing meals. Flatus in the post prandial setting is fairly nuanced and my guess would be you haven’t been eating a high protein diet for very long. You’ll get used to it and you won’t be tooting as much.

Just blame it on the dog. It works for me.

Hi Jordan,

No, I don’t have diarrhea. But I’ve had my flatus problem for probably a year already and it hasn’t gone away.

One thing I forgot to mention is, I asked my family doctor about this and he told me to (1) take yogurt and Yakult and (2) lower my protein intake for a while to let the bacteria in the large intestine to rebalance before I bring it back up again. I’ve tried the yogurt and Yakult route but the symptom didn’t go away.

I guess I’d be wondering if you’re farting > 15x per day. If not, it’s probably not indicative of a problem.

@The_Geezer has anyone told you that you are awesome lately? you a little bit have me dying over here, THAT is exactly what my son says!!!

Maybe something like 5-10 times a day. (Never seriously counted them. LOL.)

What’s the biomedical mechanism causing this with high protein intake?

So, Jordan, if you have a high fart rate (>15/day) what are your concerns? Asking for “a friend”.

If it affects your life, I’d consider altering the diet via changing carbohydrate sources.

I don’t think a high protein count is directly associated with normal flatus.

I love this forum. Where else can one have a serious discussion about pooters?

Joining in on the “fart thread” … I’ve observed an opposite problem. When i purposely up carbs I fart a lot more than usual. What would explain that? Luckily they don’t smell much and other than the sound, people barely notice.
