Questions about thyroxine

I’m a 32 year old male who was experiencing symptoms like sensivity to cold, hair loss, and fatigue. TSH test returned 6.58 mU/L. Doctor prescribed 25mcg of Euthyrox per day. But on the Internet, it says that once should take 1.6mcg/kg, which would equal 136mcg for me as my weight is 85 kg. On the medication’s leaflet, it says that one should take 10-15mcg per kg for the first 3 months. It also says 50-100mcg per day. Why are there so many different dosages for this medication?

Doctor also ordered more tests:

  • FSL
  • LFT
  • Uric Acid

What’s the purpose of those tests in relation to my hypothyroidism? I’d ask him but he doesn’t like to be questioned.

Hello,

Dosages are variable for many reasons, but are typically adjusted based on 1) the person’s symptoms, and 2) normalization of TSH levels. I can’t speak to why your doctor started you on such a low dose at 25 mcg, though.

I do not know what an FSL test is, nor is there a reason to measure liver function tests or uric acid specifically for the evaluation of hypothyroidism. They may be checking those tests for other reasons, which again I can’t speak to why that might be.

Thanks, Austin. I’m going to see an endocrinologist instead of taking the medicine to try to figure out why I have hypothyroidism in the first place because I’m not comfortable going on lifelong medication right now. Hopefully they’ll be more receptive to questioning.

I decided to get tested again, including FT4 this time. Both ended up being normal with TSH at 3.2 µIU/Ml, and FT4 at 20.3 µIU/Ml.

I suppose the first test was a false positive. My symptoms could have been caused by something else.
