RE: 7 Rules to Optimize Protein Intake

In your article, you mention in #7 “…I will briefly state that in a healthy person- there is no upper limit for protein intake…”

As someone in the Fat Loss category via TBAB at a body weight of 248 (roughly 35% body fat at 6’1’'), my protein level starting point would be 248 lbs x 1.25 g/lb = 310 g protein daily.

Two questions:

  1. As someone with historically high triglycerides (lets say 300-400), am I outside of this category (“healthy person”) where an exception should be made for protein amounts?
  2. I’ve seen you recommend some people capping protein around 250g. Can you explain how and why (if this would in fact apply to me (caloric deficit, losing weight))?

Other details:

36 y/o MALE
6’1’’
248 lbs
44.5" waist
Untrained
Tracking macros/calories for 1 month. Lost 10 pounds without any real training yet.
Generally healthy aside from high triglycerides and in obvious need of body fat loss.

Fevzay,

  1. No, not really.
  2. I would not recommend > 250g protein per day, as you would be better off diverting those macros to carbs and fats. So, set your protein at 250 (or even 220) and go from there.

Thanks Jordan!

fevzay,
Having seen a lot of posts asking for Jordan’s advice, I’ve gotta say that yours is a sterling example of how to craft a quiry about an individual’s nutritional needs.

I mean, you clearly familiarized yourself with Jordan’s existing material, you concisely articulated your own metrics and relevant training and health status, and you asked direct questions, refering to the paradigms Jordan has already built for the community.

Jordan,
I’ve been considering adding a section to the sticky with advice on what to include in a post asking for nutritional advice. I actually wrote up a draft on my other computer before seeing this post, and it looked surprisingly a LOT like what Fevzay posted.

If you indicated this was worth crafting, it would also acknolwedge that there are plenty of valid questions that don’t follow this model (such as questions about specific studdies and supplements), and I would post a draft as a comment to the sticky for approval before incorporating it. With your and fevzay’s approval I’d also link to his post as an example.

Off topic: I browsed your instagram for the first time this weekend. My selfsatisfaction with my back musculature got taken down a notch heh. Just one though.

Serack,

That would be great man! And thanks for the back props- I’m still working on it

I feel like there should be a training sticky too, with questions such as how to warm up for rep/singles etc… and especially guidelines for weight on variant lifts (ie. just use the RPE)

And a medical one even if it just says listen to the pain podcasts! Maybe a note saying it is extremely unlikely that the Drs will be able to diagnose your injury from your post and if they could the exact diagnosis likely wont change how you should follow the guidelines. Maybe for bonus: links to some of the most relevant articles on pain science and Lorimer Mosley lectures.

I wholeheartedly agree on the sticky ideas above. May cut down on some the questions the good Doctors get. This has quickly become my forum hangout of choice.

Ha! Thanks, Serack. Time is a money…just trying to cut to the chase. I appreciate your work here on the forum with organizing and gathering info for us all.

Fevzay
aka. another jordan

I haven’t broached that since the training stuff is more broad, and I’m respectively less aquainted with it (the medical stuff x1000), but if you look at my topic start history in the unmoderated section, I’ve been working hard to fix that, and have started building the bones of such a forum based resource. What I could produce today, I don’t feel would be of high enough quality to request sticky status, but I actually think I’m pretty close to being able to build a “Bridge 1.0 Supplemental FAQ” that I would place in the unmoderated training section.

In the mean time, the BBM quickstart guide, although not necessarily answering the FAQ you just identified, is a great resource that the BBM crew have obviously been investing time in developing since it’s inception at the beginning of the year.

Hmmm, as of Friday, I’ll have officially finished my flawed first run of Bridge 1.0, and Saturday I should have enough free time during the 2 little one’s naps (same window I used for the nutrition FAQ  ) to cobble together that “Supplemental FAQ.” Assuming @LeahBBM has Sticky Mod powers in that section, I’ll ping her in the post asking if it’s up to snuff for such an action. I’ll add that I don’t see myself as an expert on these topics, more a fan, user, and aggrigator of information. As a relative newb to RPE, I get the fun of having approached the topic from a perspective of pratical ignorance that may be an appropriate foundation such an effort.

Also, sorry fevzay for hijacking your topic.
