Hello,
I’ve experienced pain in my right shoulder on and off for several years.
Finally decided to see a PT starting in December 2020. He never diagnosed a specific injury, and our work was centered around ‘fixing’ my posture ( ie - rounded shoulders, anterior glide of the humerus {I work a desk job fwiw}). We worked together for over 3 months and saw some slight improvements but it definitely was not linear progress, it got better then worse then better again. Overall - I noticed a very minimal improvement in my symptoms. I feel like the PT exercises (wall slides, chin tucks, some bodyweight work for mid/low traps) weren’t very effective when it came to the weight room. I also saw my doctor and he confirmed no injury seems to be present, good strength and range of motion, just some instability.
I read your Pain in Training article as well as the series about Shoulder Pain, and after applying those principles (load management, modifiying movements + ROM) have noticed more of a decrease in symptoms than from the PT. Not gone, but definitely more manageable and not waking me up at night anymore.
My question is this – how important in your opinion is it that i continue to work on ‘fixing my posture’? PT says that it puts me at increased risk to injury. That seems contradictory to the BBM philosophy. Seems to me like well implemented load management is the way to go.
