So I took about 2 months off from lifting lower body due to a knee injury. Been doing upper body in the meantime. Just tonight, I decided to get back in the rack and check things out and see how it felt. Well, I never even got to test my knee because of my left shoulder.
So I’ve had random left shoulder pain for probably the last 10 years. I’ve ignored it and just carried on. Sometimes it feels perfectly fine, sometimes I get a little pain doing certain movements. But it’s never inhibited my ability to actually do anything.
Tonight, when I tried to get into position to place the barbell on my back to perform back squats. I simply could not get my left arm into position because the left shoulder pain was too severe. There was just no gritting my teeth and getting through it, it was very intense pain.
I’ve never once had so much pain in my shoulder that it inhibited my ability to squat.
Any thoughts on what this could be and what I should do to address this? If I need to see a doctor, what kind of specialist should I seek out?
This could have simply been randomness, not being in the position in two months, amongst other potentially related variables. With that said, I’d probably have you try and get under the bar again to tolerance and see how the situation goes. Often we have these experiences and then think the intensity/severity of the experience means we’ve hurt ourselves severely or something must really be wrong; but that’s not necessarily the case. You could even try getting in the hi-bar position with a broom stick, then low bar with a broom stick, then the barbell again.
