Should I Squat ?

Hi, I have a little knee problem, and im not sure if its good idea to squat.

So, on Wednesday 21.2. I was doing front squats for my light squats day (5x5x80kg) and during first set, I screwed up and hurt my knee. It was fine on next rep, and I finished all 5 sets.

Next day, I was unable to squat in front of my fridge (im squating ass to grass while looking in to the fridge), knee was stiff as hell, internal rotation was unpossible and I was forced to move my entire bodyweight on another leg. Looking for socks was also kinda difficult.
On Friday 23.2, It was the same, but, I was able to do low bar squats without any problem as Im forcing my knees out. I went for 5x5x110kg.
Next two days was fine, still stiff but nothing worst. I decide to do deload week.
On Monday, 26.2. I wanted to do singles with 130kg. Knee was still a bit stiff but I was feeling fine and ended up squating 165kg for a single as a +15kg PR (im terrible at doing deload weeks). After that I had a feeling that knee was getting better.

Next morning, as I woke up, my knee was stiff AF, and even swollen AF. I started to paying attention.
On Wednesday 28.2 as the lump on knee reduce a little bit, I went for 5x5 with 60kg, low bar sqats. No pain just a bit stiff and uncofortable.
On Friday 2.3. I went to the doctor, he send me to the RTG, found nothing, diagnosed it as S83.6 according to ICD and told me, that I need a MRI. I got my MRI appointment set for 19.4. And that quite some time.

During this weekend, my knee went little better, almost no lump and I was even able to squat in front of the fridge.
On Monday 3.6. (basically yesterday) I decide to do some “light” squats, 3x5 with 110kg. No pain, just little discomfort and my screwed knee went a little bit out. It might be because of my awareness or subconsciously, I dont know. As the sets goes on, knee started to get stiffer and stiffer. Oh, and knee is popping every single time after getting to certain depth, regardless of technique, weight, or angle of the knee. One pop on the way down, and one on the way up. I decided to switch to conventional deadlift, just to make it easier on the knee (I’ve been pulling sumo for 6 months now, it simply feels more natural to me, pls dont judge).

Today, I woke up with knee completely stiff, swollen as balloon ect. It went better during the day, swelling reduce a bit. But I can still feel is stiff even as I lie in the bed.
My question is basically simple, should I squat while weighting for MRI, or do you think its a good idea? I dont really want to damage it any further but 6 weeks without squats doesn’t sound very good ether. And im not feeling any pain while I do lowbar squats.

Im 26, 175cm and 75kg. I have been in some sport (mostly track and field) since I was like 6 (expect 4 years break when I was looking for motivation). I have never done novice progression, and I started focused on strength one year ago. At this point im at 165kg squat, 180kg dl and 120kg bench. Only thing im using is belt on dl and squat but only for two mounts and only at heavy working sets. No knee sleeves. (not sure if this info can help).

I would appreciate any kind of advice, thanks. (also sorry for bad English)

I don’t think you are actively damaging your knee by training.

I also don’t think your rehab plan is particularly intelligent. You are going into the gym and doing all sorts of random things. “Deloading” with new 1RMs, randomly choosing other weights for 5x5, or 3x5, or 60 kg, etc. This is not the way things are rehabbed - I would suggest you listen to our podcasts on pain and injury and carry out a plan.

Thanks for response and your advice.

I watched EP19 and 20 of the podcast, and just to add some more info.: This is my first experience with knee problem, type of pain is dull but I would rather classified it as stiffness, its located on the left side of the right knee (probably meniscus?), It feels like something is pushing on the knee from internal side and it gets worst when I do squat and try to shift body weight on the right knee. As I try to shift weight, knee is automatically rotating out. No pain during squats just popping.

So from what I got from podcast: do body weight squats until the swelling goes off, do empty barbell squats and see if swelling returned next day, if not, add 20kg to the bar and so on…

I know that my rehab “plan” is stupid, I do all bunch of stupid things unless im on strict program, (and even then I have problems with overshooting… like doing 6 reps instead of 3 on last set just because it feels good). Oh and my deloading is always idiotic, I only do them like once in 3 months, usually after I finished a program, just to take “break” and it always ends with some sort of PR.

Once again, thank you very much for your advice and your time.
