Silly sugar question

i’ll probably get laughed out of the forum for this question, but what the heck…

I was reviewing my food diary on MFP today that my sugar intake is significantly below the 80 g recommended level. I average about 30g daily. That’s a good thing right? is it possible to actually consume too LITTLE sugar?

Let the gefaws begin!

Unless you have any health conditions that say otherwise, the amount of sugar you eat does not matter one bit so long as you are within your macros.

There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Bloggers demonize sugar because it generates clicks which puts cash in their pockets. However, a lot of people actually believe the crap they read on these blogs, and this has spread a lot of confusion and false information about nutrition in general, but especially so when it comes to sugar. 99% of these bloggers have no qualifications whatsoever, they are just a regular person falsely claiming to be an expert.

Yeah I don’t think there’s a such thing as too much or too little sugar as long as you are within your macros and meeting fibre requirements. I wouldn’t worry about it!

There is no recommended intake for sugar, there is only a cap-off recommendation (see: “ingest no more than”).

From what I have seen, which is mostly research done by the AHA, that cap is closer to 35g for men and is regarding added processed sugar.

Having said that, that recommendation is for an untrained, mostly sedentary population, and I would expect that cap would be higher for those of us who are more active. If that context is where you got the 80 g recommendation, forgive me, I’ve never seen that specifically.

To answer your question, as long as you are ingesting carbohydrates from other sources, no, there is no such thing as too little sugar, though completely avoiding sugar may likely mess with your compliance to your diet because sugar is delicious.
