Snacking, fasting and MPS

Hi Jordan

I noticed you’ve recommended against snacking before:

I’m wondering - does the food you’re snacking on have to contain calories in order for it to interfere with the processes that occur during fasting? Some examples: 1. Black coffee with no sugar or milk
2. Water
3. Diet soda (I note these usually have a few calories) I drink a lot of black coffee, water and (to a lesser extent) diet soda between meals and I’m wondering if this may be interfering with MPS.

Thank you

Jared

Jared,

It appears that if the foods are just carbs and fats (and even small amounts of protein) then someone would be fine from a MPS standpoint.

While I think most people’s snacking habits undermine their dietary strategies, that sentiment has nothing to do with MPS frequency.

Are you saying that if one ate a larger amount of protein during this ‘refractory period’ it would actually inhibit MPS?! Or just that that dose of protein may not contribute to MPS (and just add to daily calories)?

Potentially both. It’s not that black or white. However, I would not recommend managing any aspect of a person’s diet based on this information.
