Squat volume and DOMS

Background:

I get cripplingly sore from high squat volume in a single session, especially if that session contains the majority of my weekly squatting volume. I have experienced this in two different circumstances on BBM templates.

The first was the no-belt squats in The Bridge. They are introduced in the second half of the program as sets of 6 just as the number of reps for the squat variants in the other sessions are falling dramatically. These made me sore to the point I had trouble walking every Saturday and Sunday.

The second is the competition squat in the GPP Hypertrophy template. Again the squats are programmed as 6’s, other squatting volume in the program is low, and again I find myself brutally sore for 2 days following the session.

Since the BBM party line seems to be that you shouldn’t get this sore very often in your training, I’m thinking struggling to walk two days per week is probably not an expected outcome.

Questions:

Have you seen this before with other trainees? How would you recommend addressing this issue? I’ve considered breaking up the squat volume and spreading it across multiple sessions or, for my current run of the hypertrophy program in particular, changing my belt squat to one of the barbell variants (SSB or Front) to get a little more frequent exposure to more specific stress, though my experience on The Bridge seems like a strike against the latter approach.

Thanks for all your help!

This tends to improve with time, though you may need to adjust the dose of training downward and take things back up a bit more slowly over time. We would recommend against reducing frequency, but you could temporarily reduce intra-session volume (e.g., take a set or two off) and/or lower the RPE targets by 1 for a period of time.

Thanks Austin.

Now that I know this sort of volume distribution can give me trouble, I will watch out for it in the future and do my best to mitigate.
