Standard Rehab after Groin Strain?

Dear Drs. Baraki and Feigenbaum,

I recently executed a set of 4 on the deadlift with less than stellar form, and I’m having some drou le down under.I am 6ft 2in, 230lb. I took about a three month break from the gym after running out my NLP due to life, and I’ve been working back up for about three weeks. I was attempting a 1x5 at 405#, and I dropped my ass too much, I believe. After noticeable pain in my left testicle for a couple days, my GP diagnosed me with a groin strain via physical exam and advised to not lift for a week or two until pain subsides. He did not diagnose a hernia. Do you advise something like the Starr protocol in this case? Dial in my form and hit is as usual? Retire from lifting? Thanks for your time and attention.

Mike

I don’t recommend rest after muscle strains, and I don’t think you need to do the “Starr protocol” either. I would train as usual, adjusting the loads as needed for your tolerance (in other words, if there’s a threshold weight above which you experience an increase in sensitivity, drop it down below that and work your way up).

Thanks, Dr. Baraki. I’m already close to where I was before injury.
