Would you recommend statins for someone with this lipid panel? My doctor says it’s on the edge.
65 year old male; no diabetes, no CHD, no smoking, no high BP (systolic usually 100-120); weight, waist circumference, diet and exercise all within guidelines; parents were on statins for hyperlipidemia, father had aortic stenosis and valve replacement in his 60s.
We can’t provide specific recommendations for your situation of course, but for a hypothetical individual with the characteristics you describe, I would not typically initiate statin therapy.
If you wanted even more definitive evidence to guide decision making, you could obtain a CAC score; however, even that isn’t strictly necessary in this situation.
Would your view change if our hypothetical individual were to get the following new test results (the prior results were about a year old). To me the changes look like random fluctuations. Total C minus HDL is 137, which is not much above the 130 you have mentioned.
