sudden rapid weight gain

ive been trying to gain weight for a little while now and i have done just that. however the weight gain has only been in 2 weird sudden jumps when i increase calories by only a few hundred and i cant understand why or what to do moving forward.

  • My goal is to gain 1kg or a little more a month and keep it up for a while.
  • i am around 188cm and weighed in today at 84.4kg, i have been training for almost a year
  • i weigh myself almost every day and track my macros using myfitnesspal.

around november-december i was eating at 2800 calories and i wasnt gaining, then 3000 for just over a week and i didnt see any sign of weight increase. so i increased to 3200 then suddenly my weight increased from around 79.5kg to 82.5 kg in under 2 weeks. an important note is that at the same time i increased to 3200 calories i stopped snacking and only ate in meals.
Then i stopped training due to covid for around a month so i lowered my calories back down to 2800 while i couldnt train and my weight remained at around 82.5kg.

Then recently i have been able to train again and i started at 3000 with no weight gain, then 3100 with the same result. Feeling confident that the same thing wont happen as last time because i was sure that it was to do with eating in meals and possibly water retention i increased my calories to 3400 a few days ago and i have already jumped to 84.4kg which is at least 1kg higher than it would usually fluctuate.

i have no idea why it is increasing this suddenly with only 300 calories higher than what was a stable weight diet. do you have any idea as to what would be causing this? and what i should do moving forward?

Thank you for any help.

Sounds like some glycogen and water content increase in the short-term causing a jump, then being above maintenance level Calories. I would track average daily weight over weeks to get a better handle on what’s happening.

As far as what you should do, I don’t really know you or anything about you, but I would probably maintain the same intake for the next 2-3 weeks before changing anything.
