Hi,
I was experiencing sciatic pain for about 6 mounths so i did an MRI and it had show that i have multiple bulged discs from L1 all the way to S1. Since then i’m avoiding backsquats ( substituted them with hip belt squats), i’m doing deadlifts with light weights(130-150lbs) and i’m avoinding standing overhead presses. My symptoms are almost gone now, i still experience a little pain when i bent over with straight legs, but its much less than before. So i was wondering should i contiune with this type of training or can i go back to back squats, heavier deadlifts and standing overhead presses?
Thanks.
We have all coached people in this situation before on the barbell lifts. I would suggest that you get some coaching, very preferably in-person.
I can attest to Austin’s recommendation. After 3.5 years of unsuccessful attempts following multiple “traditional” doctor and PT protocols (orthos, neurosurgeon, PCP, physiatrists) and non-traditional modalities (you name it), I stumbled upon Starting Strength. 4 bulges/herniations in lumbar spine, barely able to walk let alone lift - a slow methodical, highly observant and adaptive approach by my SS coach, mentored by Austin and Jordan, has me lifting, squatting, and pressing 100lbs. Back amongst the land of the healthy and strong(er) than I have been in 4 years. Good luck.
