Swollen knee from heavy squats

New to the forum, but had a quick question.
Recently just started The Bridge program and everything is going smooth. Recently though I have some swelling in my L knee that I had surgery on for a dislocated kneecap back when I played football about 10 years ago. I’ve had it aspirated a handful of times when it flares up and my most recent set of heavy squats seems to have caused another flare up. I’m having no pain, but have only noticed a bit more crepitus in my knee when I squat now. I was curious if this would be a case to go have it drained again before I continue squatting or would ice and ibuprofen be sufficient enough?

Thanks

I can’t examine your knee from here, and I can’t predict how it might respond to NSAID therapy, unfortunately.

Patellar dislocation can certainly cause knee effusions like you’re experiencing. The fact that you aren’t experiencing pain is encouraging, and crepitus isn’t really a meaningful thing to pay attention to. The decision to get it drained would need to be made based on how severe the swelling is, and to what extent it is limiting your range of motion / function, and you would need an in-person evaluation for this.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I have no pain and it isn’t limiting my knee flexion or extension. The only complaint is that my knee just feels tighter when I bend it d/t the edema. If it gets to the point where it hinders my progress then I will have it aspirated. Just squatted 440 for 3 sets of 5 yesterday on my working sets and there was no noticeable difference besides the crepitus.
