Tingling upper/middle back pain

Hello Barbell Medicine Team,

First off I would like to thank you for all the very helpful information you guys share with everyone on here.

Now on to my question. Over the past month or two I’ve been having a tingling pain go through my middle back around to where my lower trapezius lies. The pain will move around every now and then depending on the day but stays in the region of my traps. It originally started on just the left side of my back but has recently moved on over to both sides.

The tingling seems to get worse during training. Particularly on squats where I’ve been focusing on generating more tightness and that would get my back angry with me. I would also occasionally feel a light numbness on my right hand from squats as well. On regular day to day activities I don’t feel any tingling, only when sitting down with no back support for long periods of time. It’s never been a bad pain that has affected a training session, only more of an annoyance than anything.

I know you can’t give a very accurate diagnosis on the problem but any help you can give would be very appreciated.

This is one of those things that would require an in person assessment to even hazard an intelligent guess. Standard “it hurts when I do this” rules apply here- Make sure the bar isn’t too low or too high, your arm position is correct, and you’re not doing anything weird with your head or neck during the movement.
