Tmjd

Hi,

For about 6 months now I have had jaw issues, I have been to my family doctor which told me to go see a dentist. I did and they said I have TMJ and they referred me to a specialist. But, after reading online about peoples experiences with the specialists I decided not to see one ( people say it’s an expensive massage lol ). So as of now I cant open my mouth wider then 2 fingers, my jaw keeps cracking, pain in jaw, ringing ears, and stiff neck. I have not been taking any advil or anything like that to control it, because I was worried about negatively impacting my muscle growth and destroying my liver. I just watched the video you guys made about NSAIDS and the effect on muscle which has made me willing to use them.

Now my question,

The night after training I have trouble falling asleep since my symptoms worsen. Would it be wise to take a dose of advil before sleeping on training days If it gets really bad? Also, do you think performing jaw exercises on top of doing my training which is currently a novice LP will make a difference?

Sure, the Advil (or Aleve, which is a bit longer acting) would be fine, assuming you don’t have any other medical reasons to avoid NSAIDs.

I unfortunately have no idea whether “jaw exercises” provide benefit in TM joint syndrome. Sorry man.

Thanks for replying!

Yeah my doctor told me to do these jaw exercises, stop lifting, and basically rely on NSAIDs to manage my pain. Thankfully I came across you and Jordan on youtube, and read your article on aches and pains. Now I’m pretty sure taking my press from 100 lbs to 140 lbs 3x5 in the past 3 months, has done way more for my jaw muscles than those silly exercises. At least my neck isn’t stiff 24/7 and I can chew my food now.

Thank you for all the content you guys have put out, really helpful!

Try a mouthpiece. That’s what my dentist recommended for me.

Maybe try a mouthpiece if you haven’t already. My dentist recommended one for me.
