Top football player workouts

Not sure if you guys are into football but this was all the rage about a couple weeks ago. https://youtu.be/mSDwfutIeV8
Derrick Henry is pretty much the hype running back right now and this video really exploded. And many people are saying his workout is the reason why he’s so gifted.(specifically the banded push-ups). Pretty much saying” you have to work on balance to be a good running back”. How do you explain that things like that are pointless? Or are they not pointless in your opinion? Seems like football players especially have these odd workouts.

I think if people assume a football player’s workout is the reason they’re a good football player that suggests a gross misunderstanding about sports performance, participation, and selection.

As far as “how would I explain this?”- It looks like a general strength and conditioning workout that probably has some transference over to the physical adaptations needed for FB. Are there better choices for this individual, sure, but I’ll wait until he asks me for my opinion.

A more general idea, nearly all exercises are beneficial in some way, but some are better than others in specific contexts.

I don’t think balance for football or other specific applications needs to be trained with banded push-ups or training on unstable surfaces, as this isn’t typically a limiting factor in athletic performance for those able to participate in practice and sport.

There are plenty of other exercises that are better uses of time, but I don’t see this as egregious. It may just be for fun rather than a strict part of the program. I also don’t think that non barbell athletes need to place as high of a priority on the “main” barbell lifts as a barbell athlete does.
